In my opinion, the best tool in dungeons and dragons by far is a camping knife, a large Bowie knife works also. I think this because with a camping knife, it is good for fighting but also has many other uses, like saw, compass, carving tool, and a place to store things, like matches, in the handle. These knives have gotten me out of a number of bad situations, and they can even bust a lock. Bowie knives are also effective but have less features like a compass and a place to store things.
